Established in 1988, The Kooyumjian Gallery (formerly the May Gallery) is dedicated to the photographic visual arts and is committed to promoting, fostering and exhibiting professional and emerging photographers at all stages of their careers.
The Exhibition Archives is a collection of the legacy of exhibits from the history of photography at 51成人猎奇. These exhibitions have showcased faculty, students, highlighted emerging photographers, and celebrated award-winning, well-established photographers and alumni.

Sideshow Spotlight: Dr. Nicole Miller-Struttmann鈥檚 ShutterBee Project

A collection of Missouri Bee images from evolutionary ecologist, Dr. Nicole Miller-Struttmann鈥檚
ShutterBee Project, a citizen-based science and photography project in St. Louis,
that monitored the bees in the St. Louis metropolitan area of Missouri and Illinois.
Noppadol Paothong: Images of Conservation
Oct. 4鈥揘ov. 24
Noppadol Paothong is a nature and conservation photographer and an associate fellow
with the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP). The iLCP is an
elite group of the world鈥檚 top wildlife, nature and culture photographers around the
globe. He is also a staff wildlife photographer with the Missouri Department of Conservation
and contributes his images and stories to its high-quality publication, Missouri Conservationist, Xplor and many others. For over 20 years, he has been documenting rare and endangered
species, primarily grassland grouse and their fragile habitat, and has published two
large-format national award-winning books, "Save the Last Dance (2012)" and "Sage
Grouse, Icon of the West (2017)."
Sideshow Spotlight: Animator Noah Ilbery
Aug. 7鈥揝ept. 25
Noah Ilbery (BA in Animation, 鈥�19) is a computer graphics (CG) artist based in Maplewood,
Missouri. His Moments of Imagination exhibit is a series of images that use a mixture
of macro-photography and CG to make playful scenes out of otherwise mundane objects.
This series is all about letting your mind play with what you see, taking a childlike
approach to how we perceive the world.
Gaby Deimeke: Music Photography
Aug. 7鈥揝ept. 25
Gaby Deimeke is a portrait and music photographer based in Austin, Texas. Her bold, color-saturated images of music artists include Ed Sheeran, J Balvin, Taylor Swift and Shawn Mendes. She is a cofounder of Crowdsurfer Magazine.
Originally growing up on a farm in Auxvasse, Missouri, Deimeke picked up a camera to take to a concert at 12 years old and hasn't put it down since. Deimeke received a BA (鈥�16) in Photography and Studio Art from 51成人猎奇 in St. Louis, Missouri, and an MA in Fashion Photography from London College of Fashion in London.

Griselda San Martin: Alternative Perspectives
March 1鈥揂pril 24
Spanish documentary photographer Griselda San Martin has focused on the issues of
immigration, deportation, inequality and human rights abuses at the U.S.-Mexico border
through an optic of identity and belonging. Her current emphasis is on the growing
Hispanic community in the United States and the sociopolitical implications of reactionary
narratives depicting immigrants and ethnic minorities. Her work explores the transnational
life and practices that link individuals, families and social networks across political
boundaries. San Martin鈥檚 work challenges popular assumptions about immigrants and
offers an alternative perspective 鈥� a marginalized community demonstrating resilience
and resourcefulness amidst trying situations.

This exhibit was the faculty showcase alongside the juried undergraduate photography
exhibit 鈥� a celebration of our creative community. Illustrating the current work and
creative research of our faculty and the excellence of our undergraduates, the diverse
works exhibited foster a dynamic dialogue between the students and faculty. Jurors
for the undergraduate photography exhibit were professors Chris Sagovac and Zachary
Kaufman.

This exhibit showcases the artistry of high school student photographers. The choice of subject, creativity and composition shares the immense talent of these students and shines a spotlight on the imagination of these teens. Andrew Richard Hara: Light & Darkness

Based in Hilo, on the big island of Hawai鈥檌, Andrew Richard Hara is a National Geographic visual media specialist. His photography captures extraordinary images of planet Earth鈥檚 breathtaking, dynamic landscapes: lush forests, the night sky, volcanic eruptions and the majesty of Hawai鈥檌. Andrew's work tells stories of culture, science and environmental conservation. Focusing on the contrast of light and darkness, he invites the viewer to inhabit the indescribable.
Sonya Revell: Revelry + Reverie

Miami-based photographer and 51成人猎奇 alumna Sonya Revell creates vibrant
imagery that emerges from her delightful daydreams of dazzling candy colors and connects
closely with complex and compelling characters. Her corporate client list includes:
Luxe Interiors, Wine Spectator, Forbes Magazine and American Airlines. Revell also
explores her personal, artistic photography with her series "Revelry + Reverie" with
beautiful, color saturated images full of whit and whimsy.

Jimmy Fike 鈥� Edible Plants: A Photographic Survey
March 3鈥揂pril 28, 2023
Since 2007, Jimmy Fike has been creating a photographic archive depicting North America鈥檚
rich trove of wild comestible flora. He has conducted field work in 15 different states
and amassed a collection of over 150 specimens. His photographic work sprung from
his disillusionment with the position of landscape photography in relation to pressing
threats like climate change, extinction, pollution, alienation and the loss of commons.
Fike hopes the photographic survey can serve as a historical archive of botanical
life during an era of extreme change and provide viewers all over the country an opportunity
to feel the type of bond with their landscapes that will encourage health, engender
wonder, help identify free food and, most importantly, inspire greater concern for
environmental issues.

Beloved professor at 51成人猎奇 for 25 years, Tom Barkman's retrospective
exhibit "who I was at the time" documented the evolution of his photography over time and creativity through technical
experimentation. A 2014 recipient of the William T. Kemper award for excellence in
teaching, Barkman announced his retirement from teaching this year.

educator based in New York, known for her intimate portraiture. Eid and her colleagues
received the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Domestic Print in 2020 for the

Jocelyn Augustino: Disaster

The photographs in 鈥淒isaster!鈥� are a sample of images that Jocelyn Augustino has created for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) over the course of the past 26 years. These images are now part of the historical record in the National Archives collection. Jocelyn has traveled with FEMA鈥檚 Urban Search and Rescue teams nationwide as they respond to federally-declared disasters. She deploys to document response and recovery efforts before, during and after disasters strike. Most notably, Jocelyn documented the important work the agency carried out during two historic events, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the Pentagon and to Louisiana prior to Hurricane Katrina making landfall.

鈥淢ama Cat鈥� (Dr. Cathy Daniels) and her 鈥淧otBangerz鈥� cook a meal every week for 150-200 unhoused people in St. Louis, and has a team of volunteers who help her deliver the food throughout the city. She is working toward opening a transitional home in Pine Lawn for any woman (cis, trans, or queer) in need. Her reach throughout the community seems to be never ending. She feeds anyone who needs a meal and will let nothing prevent her from helping anyone in need. In her, one sees what one person, with a lot of fire and will, can accomplish.

Below: Rwanda. R茅v茅rien Rurangwa in Switzerland. His place, his home, is here, in Switzerland. On April 20th 1994, 43 members of his closest family were brutally murdered in the Rwandan genocide, in front of his eyes. He lost an arm, an eye and was stabbed in multiple places. In December 2014, we went back to Rwanda in order to visit his former home village, Mugina.

Interested in exploring the relationship between childhood memories and a sense of place, but contained in the present moment, O'Hanlon has been revisiting important locations which marked his life, with many of the same people. This process is a form of channeling the past to bring a narrative to childhood and adulthood. Recently, when in India, he had the feeling of turning a page. These photos are the physical result of this transition. Opened to his own past, he now can see the future. It is a celebration of life.

is a photographer based in Guadalajara, Mexico. About this show he writes, "No doubt the hottest issue nowadays with Mexico is immigration into the United States of America. A history of unemployment, low salaries, lack of opportunities, corruption and poor policies within the government of Mexico have caused a massive exodus of young people, possibly in their more productive stages of forming a stable workforce within the country. They often leave behind broken families, relatives, friends and almost empty villages, just inhabited by the old, and little children.
"As a concerned photographer of social issues and as a native of Mexico, I am continually interested in documenting this dramatic subject, which is growing daily and has become a crucial issue in the government policies of both Mexico and the United States."
Mr. Hern谩ndez-Claire is represented in photographic collections worldwide and has had over 60 exhibitions in Mexico, France, French Guyana, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland, U.K., Cuba, Bangladesh, China, and the United States. This show comes to the Gallery from the Embassy of France in Washington, DC.

Elizabeth L. Gilbert: Histories in Africa, 20 Years of Photography

Elizabeth L. Gilbert has been working as a photographer based in Nairobi, Kenya, for many years. First she worked as a war photographer, but since 1998 has been documenting the rapidly changing customs and rituals of the Maasai, Samburu, Mursi, Karo, Hamar, and the Batwa peoples of the Great Rift Valley. She not only has documented ancient traditions before they completely disappear, she has brought the photographs back to the people, so that they can see and react to their own images.
Elizabeth L. Gilbert is author of and . The 51成人猎奇 Film Series held a free screening of Ms. Gilbert's new documentary film, The Last Safari, on 7 April in the Winifred Moore Auditorium.

Benedict J. Fernandez: A Life's Work in Photography

The Wall Street journal wrote of this exhibition (which is currently also on view at the Robert Anderson Gallery in New York City), "(This is) a sampling of work from Benedict J. Fernandez's long career in photojournalism. Mr. Fernandez (b. 1936) does not belong to a photo agency and does not shoot on assignment. He self-selects his projects and, since he is not working against a deadline, works on them until he is satisfied; as a consequence, his pictures frequently have an art photography quality. Unlike much photojournalism that simply records an event, Mr. Fernandez creates images that distill its essence.
"The top half of "Wall Street, New York City" (1970) is dominated by a fluttering American flag, but the scene beneath Old Glory is one of strenuous conflict as hard-hat construction workers battle police during a demonstration in support of U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam. The flag is backlit and light glances off the police helmets and the demonstrators' hard hats, charging the image with vitality. Mr. Fernandez shot both pro- and antiwar demonstrations, as well as actions in favor of, and against, the civil-rights movement." (22 Sept 2012, p. A-20)

Stephen Mallon: Reframing the Machine

Re-framing the Machine follows Stephen Mallon's winding journey of searching out his industrial landscapes. From out-takes to the decisive and violent recycling of New York City, Mallon's selects of the past decade's picture hunting are here to see.
One of the exhibition's featured projects is images of subway cars being dumped into the Atlantic. More than 2,500 of New York's decommissioned subway cars are laid to rest on the eternal seabed. Gutted and windowless, the hardest workers in the mobile world fall down to the new base, where they now forever serve another population. Mallon's photographs elicit both the sadness and the beauty of cascading water overtaking these iconic figures of New York transit as they sink beneath the surface of the water; surges and sprays are caught in time.
Another image in the exhibition is the only passenger jet aircraft to ditch in water with zero fatalities. Time moves and memories fade. Three years have passed, and it can be difficult to recall the moment for one heard the news of a passenger jet landing in a river in New York. The feelings of shock, awe, disbelief, and amazement come rushing back when seeing an airplane emerging from the icy water.
Most recently, Mallon spent six months producing a short film about the transport and installation of the new Willis Street Bridge. Produced from more than 30,000 still images, the time lapse film, "A Bridge Delivered," was reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, GQ, PDN and Wired. "A Bridge Delivered" was shown at Mr. Mallon's afternoon talk and during the opening reception.

Murat T眉remis: After the Tsunami

T眉remis is based in Germany, but has pursued photo documentary projects around the world for several decades. An award-winning photojournalist, he arrived in Banda Aceh, Indonesia shortly after the devastating Tsunami in 2005, and recently returned to show what has happened in the interim. His work has appeared in National Geographic, among many publications.
On 30 November, Dr. Dino Patti Djlal, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia, visited the Gallery to see After the Tsunami.

CREATORECORDER explores the dichotomy between a photographer as a documentarian and as an originator. The images, taken from desert, temperate and urban landscapes are manipulated to create a reality fashioned to the photographer's whim. Some of the images anthropomorphize the elements of nature by seeking out 鈥渉uman鈥� qualities鈥� applying human references to them. The intent of CREATORECORDER is to blur the line between what is reality and perception and to raise the question: to what extent is the photographer 鈥減lagiarizing鈥� creation and at what point (if ever) does the photographer become creator.

Jorge Vera is a photographer and visual artist based in Lima, Peru. His current series, "urbanismo" (2008-2010), echoes early work from his first solo show in St. Louis, "Seldom Seen" (1989), exploring iconic images of the Midwest, where he lived from 1983 to 1992. In this period Vera started capturing images of mostly empty suburbia and urban spaces and landscapes, work that reflects his experience of isolation and alienation as a young self-exiled immigrant in the United States.

The 2009 contest offered over $162,700 in prizes donated by 69 generous sponsors. The competition is open to students everywhere 鈥� at all ages 鈥� and to their teachers.
Students competed by age group: grade 9 and below, grades 10-12 (high school); and college and university levels. Students in grade 9 and below competed in single images only and the other student levels and teachers competed in both single images and portfolios. Prizes were awarded in each category at the Grand, First, Second and Third Prize levels and to the schools of the Grand Prize winners.
Two PIEA International Traveling Photo Exhibitions toured major conventions, schools, colleges and museums for three years in the USA, United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa and Canada. The top prize-winning images were published in Photo Marketing Magazine. Winners were also posted on the World Wide Web on the PIEA home page Gallery.

Cindy Lappin鈥檚 meditative walks through the Webster Groves community are the inspiration for her photography. Her work presents the beautiful imagery of natural sights in both a defocused and reflective manner. Lappin is an alumna of 51成人猎奇.
Meditative walks have also inspired Kevin Vogler鈥檚 photography, but Vogler is intrigued by the natural found objects he encounters along the way.

Robert LaRouche: A Reporter's Eye 鈥� 50 Years in the Newspaper Business

In eighth grade I was named editor of the school newspaper. That was over 50 years ago, my first newspaper job. In high school I delivered newspapers (Newark NJ STAR LEDGER), set pins in a bowling alley at night, worked in a butcher shop, learned to hand-set type. They were all experiences that I cherish, part of the general education a journalist needs to understand the real world.
Since then I have made my living as a reporter and feature writer, news and magazine photographer, teacher and photo editor. In my mind they are all the same: gather information, organize it and pass it on.
This is what we do: Tell the story. Try to get it right.
The words give you the details, the hard fact matter. The photos show what the story is about, physically and emotionally. They work together to tell the story.
I worked at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, as photographer and photo editor, for 43 years. Before that I worked at newspapers in Elizabeth, NJ; Toledo, Cleveland, Washington Court House and Yellow Springs, Ohio; Russellville, KY. and Santa Fe, NM. Some of those jobs were while I was a student at Antioch College in Ohio, where students spent half their time on full time "co-op jobs" as part of the education. They call them internships now.
As a matter of simple coincidence, in my career I have ridden the waves of changing technology, from hand-set headlines and hot lead to offset printing, from processing sheet film from a 4X5 Speed Graphic to editing digital photos in Photoshop on a computer. I had to bootleg 35mm and roll film on the night shift because the chief photographer believed only sheet film was "professional."
The cliche is that "it has been an honor and a privilege." I'll pass on the honor, but a lifetime as a working newspaperman has been a decided privilege, an opportunity granted to a few to have a voice in significant social dialogue. Privilege implies responsibility, always. In the new corporate world of journalism ethics by committee, there are multiple pages of written guidelines. They boil down to some simple basics:
Be honest. Be real. Yes, "honesty" is subjective. It is a big part of integrity, seeking the truth to the best of your skills and sensibilities. Being true to your subjects and your readers is the obligation that comes with the press pass. Being true to yourself is also part of integrity.
The photographs here are a sampling of images gathered and stories covered. in my time at the Post-Dispatch. They include some of my favorite stories and a few favorite photos 鈥� that is much the same thing. I've tried to put them in context, in the caption key provided.
They do not include a great deal else that goes into the daily life and efforts of the working journalist, a staff photographer on a metropolitan daily newspaper.
But that's another story.

Richard Flamer: The Chiapas Project

Members of the Des Moines Catholic Worker discovered a humanitarian need in Chiapas, Mexico, in the area of San Cristobal de las Casas in June1999. Specifically, over 30,000 Mayan Indians have been expelled from their homes by the local government, and have suffered human rights violations at the hands of their own fellow citizens. Given their social mission with the poor, the Des Moines Catholic Worker members have committed to these people in ways that will provide educational, economic and housing development opportunities.
The plan includes several projects. They are finishing work on a Community Center which contains a child care center that enables single mothers to go to work, and will house a sewing cooperative, providing much needed jobs. The plan also includes building a warehouse for storage of building materials for Habitat for Humanity, with upper level classrooms for adult education, among other projects.

After the Fall is the story of one family who lived through the 1995 fall of the United Nations-declared "safe area" of Srebrenica 鈥� the worst atrocity in Europe since the end of World War II. More than five hundred survivors from Srebrenica are today in St. Louis, part of the larger Bosnian refugee community of 30,000.
This exhibition was part of 51成人猎奇's "Infusing Human Rights into the Undergraduate Curriculum" workshop, 29-30 March 2001.
